One month from today, the MSMS Class of 2013 moves into the residence halls and begins the process of joining the MSMS family. MSMS is preparing for their arrival and the return of the Class of 2012 for their senior year. This transition will not be easy. It will be challenging. It will result in lifetime rewards. Bright, creative young people will sometimes doubt their own abilities. MSMS as a school, a community and a family knows that all of them can be successful and we will do our best to support them along the way. Expect lives to be changed. We are just beginning …………

MSMS attends classes

Good Morning,
MSMS will attend Classes as scheduled today. Over the last several hours MSMS students proved once again to be not only the most intelligent but also the most mature and resilient. I am very proud of them. While we attend classes today, we will also be thinking of those who have suffered such great loss over the past few days. At present, I anticipate that the MSMS Prom will proceed as scheduled.

MSMS and Budget

Parents, Alumni and Friends of MSMS,
I seldom ask you to become politically active. This is an exception. While the legislature has historically been very good to MSMS and Governor Barbour has always been supportive, the fact is we need help.
The MSMS budget is a part of the Mississippi Department of Education Budget (HB 1494) that funds K-12 Public Education. If K-12 Public Education takes a cut, MSMS can bank on a similar or higher percentage cut. While local school districts have local taxing authority to offset state cuts, MSMS has no way to make up the loss of revenue other than direct contributions. The funding measure has been sent to a conference committee of the House and Senate. The Governor is also an essential part of this process.
Both the House and Senate convened at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The Senate met for approximately 30 minutes and is adjourned until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The House adjourned at 10:00 and will also reconvene at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Neither chamber considered conference reports on appropriation bills, as negotiations are still at a standstill.
A large number of legislators are now headed home. It is extremely important that you let your legislator know of your concerns. They represent you and are very mindful that it is an election year. Be professional in your conversations with legislators. If you don't know who your legislator is, visit www.votesmart.org and enter your address in the search bar at the top of the page to determine your senator and his/her contact information. Of course, you may also visit the State Web Page at http://www.mississippi.gov/ms_sub_template.jsp?Category_ID=2 for the legislative roster which provides contact information for legislators, including their capitol phone numbers.
Speaking of elections, please be an informed voter and search out those candidates who take a positive stand on support of MSMS regardless of their party affiliation. Statewide officials and local legislators need to know that you care how they feel about all important topics including MSMS and watch how they vote, what they do and say.
