Do MSMS students live in the same dorms with MUW students?
No. MSMS students live in Goen Residence Hall and Frazer Residence Hall. These residence halls are used only by MSMS students; the girls in Goen and the boys in Frazer.
The average number of classes that a student takes is six to seven. Depending on what times and days these classes meet, you will have open periods at various times during the day. The academic class day is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tutorial time is 4:00- 4:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday. In class, MSMS faculty bring a great deal of experience and expertise to every subject. A full third of our faculty have their doctorates and many have been recognized nationally for their achievements. MSMS classrooms often echo with class discussions, and special projects allow students to work separately and together on practical uses of knowledge. MSMS classes are challenging, but not impossible. Hard work and commitment will be necessary to succeed at MSMS, but you will not have to do it alone. MSMS teachers are always willing to help inside and outside of class and at tutorials. Other MSMS students can also be a source of assistance.
How much does it cost to attend MSMS?
MSMS is a state-supported school and charges no tuition. In 2008, the state legislature mandated a $500-per-semester room and board fee to help offset rising food costs. For families for whom this would be a financial hardship, waivers and assistance are available. There is also a small activities fee, as well as some incidental costs (renting a post office box, money for laundry machines, etc.).
Can I come home for the holidays?
MSMS students only live on campus during the school year. They can go home on weekends and MSMS closes the residence halls during Thanksgiving Holidays, Christmas Holidays, Easter Holidays, and Spring Break. In addition, a three-day weekend is scheduled for those months not containing a holiday and students return home for those weekends, too. MSMS is not open in the summer.
In addition to playing almost every sport imaginable in intramural competitions, MSMS is also a member of the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA). Through MHSAA, MSMS students have the opportunity to compete in selected team sports.
I do not live far from Columbus. Can I commute or do I have to live in the residence hall?
MSMS is a residential school and all students must live on campus. The residential aspect of MSMS is seen as just as important as the academic aspect. In the residential environment, students learn to be self-motivated and to manage their time wisely. They learn responsibility and how to live in a community.
Will attending MSMS help me to get a scholarship to college?
MSMS employs two guidance counselors who make students aware of the scholarship opportunities available to them. They also assist students in applying to schools, filling out college applications, and even how to write the application essay. MSMS' students have made quite a good impression on many universities and these universities are very interested in admitting more of our students. To answer the question, there are no specific scholarships associated with MSMS and MSMS cannot guarantee that all students will receive scholarships. However, MSMS believes that the challenging curriculum and opportunities for leadership offered by MSMS produce the kind of students that colleges, universities and other scholarship agencies are looking for.
Starting the second semester of the junior year, students can participate in research projects, engage in mentorships with professionals in the field they wish to pursue, and volunteer for community service projects. MSMS is technology rich with over 150 networked, Internet-connected computers for student use. MSMS students develop lifelong friendships with students who share similar intellectual interests and a desire to use their creative abilities. In addition, the MSMS experience provides the opportunity for becoming more independent in living and learning. There are a variety of opportunities in student government and other organizations which allow students to pursue extracurricular interests. More than anything, MSMS students are given the Opportunity for Excellence.
