Admission Criteria
Criteria for applying to MSMS:
- Be a resident of Mississippi.
- Be a current tenth grader with a minimum of 12 Carnegie units of study upon .completion of the tenth grade. Students must earn a minimum of 13 units while at MSMS
- Have a record of school performance that is above average (B or higher) in most subjects and superior (A) in mathematics and science. Although MSMS focuses on mathematics and science, we also offer a wide variety of classes in the arts and humanities to ensure that students benefit from a well-rounded curriculum.
- Have a strong desire to attend MSMS. Students attending MSMS must be self-motivated to meet the academic requirements and succeed in the residential setting.
- Be noted for intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, and imagination.
- Have earned high scores on the ACT (standardized test). Your application will not be reviewed unless you have an ACT score.
- Submit a completed application. The Priority Deadline for Regular Admission for the Class of 2013 is January 21, 2011.
- Demonstrate clear evidence of strong interest in science and mathematics.
- Provide samples of writing ability.
- Submit school recommendation forms. Each applicant will request recommendations from the school counselor, a mathematics teacher, a science teacher, and another teacher or administrator. Forms are in the application packet.
- Upon invitation, undergo a personal interview. Applicants must score a 10 or above (of a possible 15) to be invited for an interview.
- Other criteria deemed appropriate by the State Board of Education.
Required Classes
please note: The classes listed below must be completed prior to your enrolling at MSMS. You can be accepted to the school without having all of these complete; however, you will not be enrolled until you have completed each
- Two units of English
- Two units of Science - Biology I required, Chemistry recommended
- Two units of Math - Algebra I and Geometry required
- Two units of Social Studies - Mississippi Studies required
- One unit of Technology - Computer Discovery or .5 unit of Keyboarding and .5 unit of Computer Application
- One half-unit of Physical Education
- One half-unit of Health Education
